3 phases in which the female body is grateful for a mindful micronutrient supply
Menstruation, birth control pills, menopause - which micronutrients are particularly important?
B.A. Sporttherapie und Prävention
The female body accomplishes amazing things every month and goes through demanding phases of transition throughout her life. Beginning with puberty, through possible pregnancies, to menopause. Phases that can be challenging not only for the body, but also for mental well-being. Aware of what the female body accomplishes every month, in every phase, it is all the more important to address its special needs and support it in the best possible way. A conscious supply of micronutrients can be a major component in this. This has a very decisive influence on the hormone balance and is strongly dependent on a healthy diet with the appropriate nutrients. Depending on the hormonal transition phase, some nutrients are particularly important. We would like to introduce you to 3 phases and look at which vitamins and micronutrients can be particularly helpful companions.
1. menstruation
Menstruation accompanies every woman month after month and brings with it many ups and downs for the body and mood. Unpleasant pain in the lower abdomen in particular can interfere with everyday life. To provide women with more balance during this phase, the yam root has been a popular accompaniment for decades. The climbing plant from West Africa contains a particularly high proportion of disogenin. Disogenin is a so-called phytohormone, which is similar in structure to the sex hormone progesterone. In its country of origin, yam root is therefore even referred to as a "women's plant".
2. the birth control pill
The pill (oral contraceptives), as it is colloquially called, is still one of the most popular contraceptives on the market. There are so-called combination pills, which contain the artificial hormone estrogen and progestogens. This is supposed to ensure that ovulation is prevented. However, the pill can affect not only ovulation, but also the micronutrient balance. Particular attention should be paid to the B vitamins when taking the birth control pill. A conscious diet rich in vitamin B is advisable when using this contraceptive method.
3. menopause (menopause)
Menopause refers to the very last menstrual period of a woman. This marks the end of the fertile period. A phase of natural hormonal change and cessation of estrogen production begins. A conscious look at vitamin and mineral intake can also help during this upsetting time. Vitamin B6, for example, helps regulate hormone activity and should therefore be in sufficient supply for the body. Due to the decreasing estrogen, bone density also decreases. The supply of vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc should therefore be kept particularly close to hand, as they help to maintain normal bones. True treasures in times of change can also be isoflavones, these are contained in soy, for example, and are similar in structure to the declining hormone estrogen.
If one is aware of the hormonal phases of change, some balance can be regained through a mindful supply of micronutrients. In addition, it helps to be able to classify the small pitfalls of the hormonal change and to deal with them a little more calmly 😊.
