P5P is the active form that the body needs.
Only the biologically active form, pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (P5P), is used in all vitamin B6-containing Vitals products, while pyridoxine HCL, which must first be converted in the body, is not used. The biologically active vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxal-5′-phosphate is involved as a cofactor in over 140 enzyme reactions in the body and therefore fulfils various physiological functions. Almost all amino acids require one or more enzymes that are dependent on pyridoxal-5′-phosphate for their metabolism. P5P-dependent enzymes are also important for glycogen metabolism. Vitamin B6 therefore contributes to a good energy supply and can help with fatigue.
Pyridoxal-5′-phosphate is also involved in the synthesis of haem compounds and haemoglobin and plays a role in the binding and release of oxygen in the red blood cells. Haem compounds are also present in the mitochondria, which explains the influence of pyridoxal-5′-phosphate on energy levels. Since pyridoxal-5′-phosphate is taken up in the brain and P5P-dependent enzymes are involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, it contributes to normal brain and nerve functions.
Vitamin B6 is also important for the immune system, as it is required as a coenzyme in the production of certain immunoglobulins (antibodies that fight viruses or bacteria) and cytokines (substances that activate or inhibit the immune system). It is also involved in the synthesis of cysteine and in the formation and metabolism of homocysteine. Vitamin B6 also has a regulating effect on hormone activity.
Reliable upper limit
Very high doses of vitamin B6 can occasionally cause tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. For this reason, the maximum safe upper limit for vitamin supplements for adults in the Netherlands is set at 21 mg per day. It is currently being investigated whether the occasional side effects only occur with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCl and not, or to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal 5′-phosphate. Evidence suggests that only pyridoxine is toxic to nerve cells at high doses, whereas P5P does not appear to be. Vitals' product called "Vitamin B6 Pyridoxal-5'-Phosphate" contains a high dosage (20 mg) of this active ingredient in a pure, biologically active form. The raw material is contained in a plant-based capsule made from manioc and is supplemented with a rice-based excipient.

E-Mail: kundendienst@vitals.eu.
