Vitamin B1 (thiamine) has many different functions in our body. Its role in energy production and the transmission of stimuli between our nerve cells and muscles is particularly important. High concentrations are particularly detectable in the heart, brain, liver, kidneys and skeletal muscles.

Effect of vitamin B1 (thiamine)
Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is one of the first vitamins to be discovered. It is involved in the production of energy from carbohydrates and is essential for the metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids. It therefore promotes the performance of our heart muscle, our brain and our skeletal muscles.
In the nervous system, thiamine supports the transmission of stimuli between nerves and muscles as well as between the nerve cells in our brain. This ensures good coordination of our movement sequences and a good ability to react. Vitamin B1 can also regenerate damaged nerve cells and support the growth of nerve fibres. The muscle tone of our digestive system also relies on vitamin B1, so that it indirectly promotes digestion.
Vitamin B1 influences the important neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It therefore has a mood-enhancing effect and can have a calming effect in times of stress.
Vitamin B1 deficiency - causes and symptoms
Our diet contains only small amounts of vitamin B1, mainly in meat, wholemeal products, pulses and vegetables. As thiamine can only be stored to a limited extent and has a high turnover rate, a targeted intake from outside is recommended if there is an increased requirement. For example, during physical exertion (sport, hard physical labour), pregnancy and breastfeeding, stress, smoking, too much alcohol or illnesses that are associated with fever and require a lot of energy.
Many people also suffer from a hidden vitamin B1 deficiency due to their modern diet. Almost all foods on the market contain sugar. This not only leads to weight problems. Sugar is also a powerful predator of vitamin B1.
Thiamine deficiency can manifest itself in tiredness, sleep disorders, irritability and muscle weakness.
