Galactose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that is closely related to other sugars such as glucose (grape sugar) and fructose (fruit sugar). As an energy source, galactose has a decisive advantage over glucose: compared to glucose, galactose hardly needs any insulin to be absorbed by the cell and the intake of galactose therefore has hardly any effect on our blood sugar level and keeps it stable.

Galactose (mucilage sugar) is a simple sugar or monosaccharide - just like glucose or fructose - but with a lower glycaemic index, which helps to keep blood sugar levels stable. When galactose is written without a prefix or other name suffix, it always refers to D-galactose. Galactose occurs naturally in fermented milk products such as yoghurt and kefir and in very small quantities in artichokes, mushrooms, papayas and tomatoes. Galactose is also found in breast milk and forms the basis for important early brain development after birth.
