H. pylori is a rod bacterium and can colonise the human stomach. If an infection occurs, this can be the cause of various stomach diseases and trigger an increased release of stomach acid. The consequences of H. pylori colonisation can include type B gastritis, around 75 percent of gastric ulcers and practically all duodenal ulcers. In the diagnosis of gastric diseases, analysing the stool for the bacterium is therefore a standard procedure today.
