The name "Saccharomyces boulardii" is derived from the microbiologist Henri Boulard, who discovered this type of yeast in Indochina in 1920 during a cholera epidemic. There he noticed that the locals liked to drink lychee to protect themselves. During his research, he then came across this particular yeast fungus, which is found on the skin of the lychee fruit.
