Vegan and without additives. 5-MTHF is the form of folic acid that occurs in the human body. This means that even "normal" folic acid must first be converted by the body into 5-MHTF so that our organism can utilise it.

On the one hand, it seems logical to consume folic acid directly as 5-MTHF, i.e. in the form in which we need it. On the other hand, there are people who are dependent on this intake because their body cannot convert folic acid to MHTF, which is usually caused by a genetic defect.

According to Pharmazeutische Zeitung online(issue 11/2009), for example, this affects every second woman. It was discovered as early as 1995 by P. Frosst et al. (see study: A candidate genetic risk factor for vascular disease: a common mutation in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, Nature Genetics 10, 111 - 113 (1995)). It would therefore make no sense for the people affected to take "normal" folic acid supplements.

The folic acid in food cannot be utilised by those affected either, unless it is present as 5-MHTF.
If you have any further questions, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist, even if you would like to take such a genetic test. If this is too time-consuming for you, simply take 5-MHTF instead of "normal" folic acid, as this is optimally utilised by everyone, regardless of whether they have a genetic defect or not!
