Ester-C, the non-acidic vitamin C
After vitamin C is absorbed by the organism, it is converted into specific metabolites (intermediate or end products). Threonic acid appears to be the most important metabolite. Ester-C® is a patented vitamin C formulation consisting of calcium ascorbate that has already been partially converted, resulting in the presence of certain natural metabolites such as threonic acid. Threonic acid and the other vitamin C metabolites promote the absorption and metabolism of vitamin C in the body. Threonic acid also appears to be able to mobilise the vitamin C already stored in the body.
Benefits of Ester-C
Studies have identified the following advantages of ester-C compared to ascorbic acid:
- enters the bloodstream twice as quickly and remains in the body twice as long
- reduces the excretion of oxalates in the urine to a quarter
- Ascorbate loss via the urine is six times lower
- Improved incorporation of vitamin C into the leucocytes and longer storage
- is well tolerated by the digestive organs, even in high quantities
- poses no risk to tooth enamel
Ester-C® is produced in the USA by The Ester C Company using a patented manufacturing process.
Bioflavonoids
Bioflavonoids are substances that are soluble in water and, together with vitamin C, are mainly found in fresh fruit and vegetables. Bioflavonoids are considered to be vitamin C boosters. They support the bioavailability of vitamin C.
Effect of vitamin C
Vitamin C is probably the most frequently mentioned vitamin that is known to have a positive influence on resistance. The immune system is supported by vitamin C, especially during intense physical activity or in the cold. However, this vitamin also plays a role in a variety of processes.
In the body, vitamin C acts as a water-soluble antioxidant and is crucial for the defence against free radicals. It is part of a complex structure of the body's own antioxidants, those from food and antioxidant enzymes, which are interdependent and interact with each other. In this function, it is involved in protecting DNA, proteins and fats from oxidative damage and thus contributes to the maintenance of healthy cells and tissue. Vitamin C is also required as a coenzyme for three different enzymes involved in the synthesis of collagen (the most common building material in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels, among other things.
Vitamin C is a necessary cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. As both act as neurotransmitters and hormones in the body, vitamin C has a positive influence on the function of the nervous system and supports normal mental function. Vitamin C is essential for two enzymes for the synthesis of carnitine, which is needed to transport long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production.
Vitamin C therefore contributes to energy levels. It can also help with fatigue. In addition, there are many people who do not get enough iron in their diet - especially women of childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. The dietary absorption of iron is improved by vitamin C. This is non-haeme iron, which is found in both plant and animal foods. The absorption of haeme iron (which is only found in animal products) is not affected by vitamin C. Around 90 % of the iron in food is non-haeme iron. Only 10 % is made up of haeme iron. Vitamin C acts as an electron donor and can thus convert oxidised vitamin E back into its active, reduced form, thus preserving the effect of the vitamin.
As the human organism is not able to produce vitamin C on its own, it is entirely dependent on the diet for its supply.
Nutritive properties
- Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system during and after intensive physical activity (this effect only occurs with an additional intake of 200mg vitamin C)
- Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones and cartilage as well as skin and teeth
- Vitamin C contributes to normal energy metabolism Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the nervous system and to normal mental function as well as to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and increases iron absorption
- Vitamin C contributes to the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E and helps to protect cells from oxidative stress

Ingredients
Calcium ascorbate, citrus bioflavonoid complex, bulking agent (microcrystalline cellulose [cellulose gel]), rice starch (Oryza sativa), citrus bioflavonoid complex, coating agent (hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, stearic acid, glycerol, carnauba wax).
Recommended dosage
Take 1 tablet per day with water with a meal.
Information from EnergyVital
According to scientific research, the body can absorb a maximum of 500 mg of vitamin C at a time; any excess is excreted in the urine. We therefore recommend dividing the tablet and distributing it throughout the day. Unless the therapist clearly instructs you to take them whole.
This is also an advantage if you have problems swallowing, as the 1 g tablets are quite large. There is also no reason not to crush them in a mortar or, if not available, simply with a wooden meat tenderiser; they can also be added to food as a powder.
Storage instructions
Store in a cool, dry place away from light (not in the fridge).
Legal information
The recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. Food supplements are no substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. Store out of the reach of small children.
