The maca plant (Lepidium meyenii) belongs to the genus Lepidium in the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). Maca is cultivated as a field crop in the upper altitudes of the Peruvian Andes, in a narrow zone between 4000 and 4500 metres.

The plant grows in poor soil with a stormy climate and frosts of up to -20°C. Only a few plants can thrive in this area. The soil in which maca grows also contains lots of minerals, which means that the maca plant is also rich in minerals. However, the robust plant seems to effortlessly withstand wind and cold as well as aggressive UV radiation. It is therefore assumed that the maca root derives its positive properties from this extreme climatic habitat.

The tuber is traditionally used by the local population as a food and medicinal plant. The aromatic, pungent shoots of the maca are a popular vegetable. Its fleshy, sweet roots are boiled, dried and ground.
