- With 250 mg alpha-lipoic acid per capsule
- Can support the formation of intracellular antioxidants
- Contributes to carbohydrate metabolism
Alpha- or α-lipoic acid, ALA from the English alpha-lipoic acid
The antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid is only produced by the body in small quantities. We absorb most of it through our food: Red beef and organic meat are among the most important sources.
Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant and helps to reduce oxidative stress in the body. Alpha-lipoic acid counteracts free radicals and can support the formation of intracellular antioxidants (e.g. gluthate ions). Alpha-lipoic acid contributes to carbohydrate metabolism by improving blood glucose levels.
The R-form is naturally present in the body and is considered the "active" form. The S form is a by-product of the manufacturing process and is considered the biologically "inactive" form, although some research shows that it may have activities other than the R form that may be beneficial. Generally considered inactive, most commercially available alpha lipoic acid products contain a 50:50 mixture of the two forms.
The use of lipoic acid as an effective antioxidant
The main reason for this is that the body routinely converts alpha-lipoic acid into dihydrolipoic acid, an even more potent antioxidant capable of counteracting the damaging effects of peronitrite radicals.
In addition, lipoic acid in its dihydrolipoic acid form has the ability to restore vitamin C, which in turn can regenerate vitamin E. The multi-talented nature of these properties of lipoic acid may increase its popularity with consumers, especially athletes looking to optimise their energy metabolism.
A lesser-known reason for taking lipoic acid as a dietary supplement is that it compensates for a lack of red meat and animal fat, which athletes today often avoid. Red meat and animal fats are a rich source of lipoic acid. This is why lipoic acid is becoming a very popular dietary supplement among vegetarians and vegans. Lipoic acid has also attracted attention for its supportive effect against the formation of cataracts. The water-soluble and antioxidant properties of lipoic acid lead to oxidative relief of the aqueous environment of the eyes.
